Oormos

Together with youth group Ruimtevaart from Bruges, we set up a project on imaginary sounds from the universe. Since the cosmos is a vacuum, we cannot perceive audible sounds. Yet NASA has succeeded in converting electromagnetic waves from the sun, moons and planets into audible signals.

Experimenting and composing with "inaudible" sounds

The youngsters from Ruimtevaart worked with "sound recordings" that NASA made of moons and planets and the sound design from the Star Wars film. Eventually they collected sounds themselves. In this way they created a fictional sound cosmos based on the inaudible electromagnetic waves emitted by our daily electronic devices. The result could be admired in a special installation, for which we also used our Zwerm, during the Kosmos Festival in the Concertgebouw in Bruges (26.03 to 07.04.2019) .

Thomas Goethals of Jeugdwerkgroep Spaceflight: "With Oormos a whole new world opens up for me. I had no idea that there are so many inaudible sounds all around me, it is really fascinating to really hear how all those sounds sound. "
